> Turn a PDF bank statement into a CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets in three steps. Free, no bank login. What the columns mean and what to do when it goes wrong.

A PDF statement looks like a table, but it is closer to a photo of one. Select the rows, paste them into a spreadsheet, and everything lands in a single column with the dates stuck to the descriptions. That is why people go looking for a CSV.

A CSV file holds the same transactions as plain data: one per row, one fact per column. Every spreadsheet opens it. Yavo has a free converter that turns a PDF statement into one. You drop in the PDF, confirm your email and the CSV arrives in your inbox. No bank login, no account. This guide walks through it, explains what ends up in the file and covers what to do when something goes wrong.

## What a CSV is, and why you want one

CSV stands for comma-separated values. It is a text file where each line is a row and commas separate the columns. There is no formatting and no page layout, and that is the point: Excel, Google Sheets, accounting software and budgeting apps can all read it.

The usual reasons to want your statement as a CSV:

- You want to work in Excel or Google Sheets. Sort by amount, filter one merchant, add up a category with a formula or a pivot table.
- Your accountant or your tax return needs the numbers. A CSV can be summed or imported into bookkeeping software. A PDF has to be retyped.
- You want to see where a month went. You cannot answer that from a page of text, but you can from a list of rows.
- You are moving data into another app. Many apps import a CSV, so check which columns yours expects.

If your bank lets you export a CSV directly, use that. It is the cleanest source. But plenty of banks and cards only hand out PDFs, or only for older months. That gap is what the converter is for.

## How to convert a bank statement PDF to CSV in three steps

### 1. Download the statement as a PDF

Sign in to your bank the way you always do and download the statement. One month at a time works best. The converter takes one PDF per upload, up to 5 MB and 20 pages.

### 2. Drop it on the converter and confirm your email

Open the [bank statement PDF to CSV converter](https://www.yavo-app.com/tools/bank-statement-pdf-to-csv/) and drop the file on the page. Then enter your email. A 6-digit code arrives, good for 10 minutes. Type it in.

We ask for the address because the CSV is sent to it, and to no other address. You do not need an account. Each address can convert 3 statements a day.

### 3. Check the preview and open the CSV

A page or two takes seconds. A long statement takes a minute or two. You can close the tab while it reads: the CSV is emailed when it is ready.

The first 10 rows show up on the page, with the row count. If some lines of the statement could not be turned into rows, the page says how many. The full file arrives as an attachment called `yavo-statement.csv`. Save it and double-click.

If everything lands in one column, tell the spreadsheet where the commas are. In Excel choose Data, then From Text/CSV, and set the delimiter to comma. In Google Sheets choose File, then Import, upload the file and keep the comma separator.

## What the columns mean

The file has a header row and one row per line of the statement, in the order the statement prints them. These are the columns:

| Column | Example | What it holds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| date | 2026-10-04 | The day printed on the statement, as year-month-day |
| description | Lidl | The line as the bank printed it |
| amount | -27.02 | Dot for the decimal, two places. Money out is negative |
| currency | EUR | The three-letter currency code |
| direction | debit | `debit` for money out, `credit` for money in. It always matches the sign of the amount |
| balance | 8342.91 | The running balance after that line. Empty where the statement prints none |

Here are the first rows of a file made from a sample statement with made-up data:

```
date,description,amount,currency,direction,balance
2026-10-02,Gehalt Example GmbH,3420.00,EUR,credit,8400.55
2026-10-04,IKEA,-30.62,EUR,debit,8369.93
2026-10-04,Lidl,-27.02,EUR,debit,8342.91
2026-10-04,Miete Oktober,-1150.00,EUR,debit,7192.91
```

The year-month-day date is deliberate. It sorts correctly as text and it means the same thing in every country, which `04/10/2026` does not. The file is UTF-8, so accents and symbols survive. And if a description starts with `=`, `+`, `-` or `@`, the file adds a leading apostrophe so your spreadsheet shows it as text and never runs it as a formula.

## When it does not work

**The PDF is a scan or a phone photo.** A scan is a picture of a page, and the converter is built for the PDF your bank generates. We have not tested scans, so use the PDF from your bank when you can. If you only have a scan, the converter may refuse it or misread it, so check every total.

**The PDF is long.** The limit is 20 pages and 5 MB. Download one month, or one account, at a time. If the page says it has too many pages, split the file.

**The PDF has a password.** A protected PDF cannot be opened. Remove the password in your PDF viewer, or download the statement again without one.

**The numbers look wrong.** An AI reads your PDF, so check the totals against the statement. If the page reports skipped lines, look at what is missing. If pages cannot be read at all, you get no file. We prefer that to handing you a CSV with pages missing and a total that quietly does not add up.

**Excel shows one column, or the amounts look odd.** Excel in countries that write decimals with a comma expects semicolons between columns and commas in numbers. This file uses commas between columns and a dot in amounts. Import it with Data, then From Text/CSV, instead of double-clicking. Our [German guide](https://www.yavo-app.com/de/blog/kontoauszug-pdf-in-csv-umwandeln/) goes through this step by step.

**The email did not arrive.** Wait a few minutes and look in spam. If the page says it could not confirm the delivery, the email may still be on its way. Do not convert the file again right away.

## What happens to your PDF

A bank statement is private, so here is exactly what the converter does with it:

- You use a PDF you downloaded yourself. There is no bank login at any point.
- Your PDF goes to our server, which holds it in memory only while it is read. It is not saved to a disk, an object store or a database, and it is cleared from memory when the reading ends.
- The pages are read by Google's Gemini API, which Google provides to us as a processor. Google keeps the pages and its answer for up to 55 days for abuse checks only, and does not train on them.
- No row of your statement is written to any database. The first 10 rows wait in memory until the page fetches them once, or for 10 minutes, and then they are gone.
- The CSV exists in the email we send to your confirmed address. How long your mail provider keeps that email is not up to us, so delete it when you are done with it.
- If you tick the optional box, we keep your address for money tips and Yavo updates until you unsubscribe. If you do not, we add you to nothing.

## From CSV to a budget, without the spreadsheet

A CSV answers the question "what is in this statement". Most people want the other one: where does my money go? A spreadsheet is a slow way to find out. You sort the rows, label each one by hand, build the formulas, and do it all again next month.

Yavo does that part for you, from the same statement. Send a CSV, Excel or PDF statement to your personal Yavo import address, and the transactions arrive in your budget, categorized. No bank login, no copying rows. [See how statements work in Yavo](https://www.yavo-app.com/features/email-statements/).

If you only want to know which charges repeat, the [Subscription Finder](https://www.yavo-app.com/tools/subscription-finder/) does that from a statement. All our [free tools](https://www.yavo-app.com/tools/) work without an account.

## Questions

### Is the converter free?

Yes. There is no account and no card. We ask for your email because the CSV is sent there, and a 6-digit code confirms the address is yours. Each address can convert 3 statements a day.

### Do I have to give you my online banking login?

No. You download the PDF from your bank yourself and give us that one file. Yavo never asks for a bank login.

### Which banks and statements work?

There is no list. If your bank or card gives you a PDF with a table of dates, descriptions and amounts, it usually works, in any currency. The reader follows the layout the way a person would instead of matching a template, so an unusual layout can come out wrong. Compare the totals with your statement.

### What are the limits?

One PDF per upload, up to 5 MB and 20 pages. Each email address can convert 3 statements a day. For a longer period, download one month at a time.

### How accurate is the CSV?

An AI reads your PDF, so mistakes are possible. Check the totals against the statement before you rely on the file. A line that cannot be turned into a row is left out and counted, and the page tells you how many. If a page cannot be read, you get no file at all, not a file with pages missing.

### Is my statement stored?

No row of your statement is stored by us. The PDF is held in our server's memory while it is read and is never saved to a disk or a database. The CSV exists in the email we send you and in none of our storage.
